Speak Easy

Updated: Apr 5, 2020

(This, after sitting through a three-day conference full of talks and talking.)

Such a difference between presenting a good – even very good – speech, and talking to people.

The former carries with it a sense of … apartness. An identity gap between the speaker and the listener. While the best speakers seem, in some odd way, to be in the crowd listening, even as they speak.

They are thinking through with us things they would have to think through with themselves, even if we weren’t here.

The difference, perhaps, between “delivering” a speech … and giving one.
